Despite his lengthy criminal record of assaultive and threatening behaviour toward women, which saw him pronounced a “long-term offender” eight years ago, Mr. Tremblay is still probably best known for his controversial attempt, almost two decades ago, to stop a young woman then pregnant with his child from having an abortion.
In 1989, Chantal Daigle was Mr. Tremblay’s recently estranged and pregnant girlfriend, and when he learned she was planning to have an abortion, he won an injunction in Quebec Superior Court, later upheld by the Quebec Court of Appeal, preventing her.
